Repeated military coups during the 1970s and 1980s were followed by multiparty elections in the early 1990s. Burkina Faso's high population density and limited natural resources result in several hundred thousand seasonal farm workers seeking employment in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana every year. The instability in Burkina Faso and surrounding regions results in limited Saturniidae collecting.
The country is slightly larger than Colorado and, at 13 N latitude, has a tropical climate with warm, dry winters and hot, wet summers. The land is mostly flat with undulating plains and savannahs. There are hills in the west and southeast, but Tena Kourou, the highest point, has elevation of only 749 m.
Frequent droughts, poor soil and high incidence of AIDS are great challenges for the people of Burkina Faso and for all who would like to help them.
Below is an active checklist for Burkina Faso. A special thanks goes to Rodolphe Rougerie for his help with (creation of) this list.
The Attacini spin cocoons; the Urotini and
the Bunaeini are earth pupators whose larvae are often used for
food. |
