Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, also refered to as DRC, DR Congo, Congo and Congo-Kinshasa, and formerly Zaire, was established as a Belgian colony in 1908 and gained its independence in 1960.

Located in Central Africa, northeast of Angola, DR Congo is slightly less than one-fourth the size of the United States.

The country straddles the equator and has a very narrow strip of land that controls the lower Congo River and is the only outlet to the South Atlantic Ocean.

There is a dense tropical rain forest in the central river basin, a low lying plateau, and the climate is generally hot and humid, a bit cooler and drier in the eastern highlands and in the mountainous southeast.

North of the Equator, the wet season runs from April to October, and the dry season stretches from December to February. South of the Equator, the months from November to March are wet, and the months of April to October are dry.

DR Congo is divided into ten provinces and one city* (ville): Bandundu, Bas-Congo, Equateur, Kasai-Occidental, Kasai-Oriental, Katanga, Kinshasa*, Maniema, Nord-Kivu, Orientale, Sud-Kivu.

Many thanks to Thierry Bouyer who provided me (May 2006) with an extensive checklist for Democratic Republic of the Congo. Those species marked with xx are not on Thierry's list and I need to get clarification before removing them. They probably are not valid species or may be synonyms for other species.
