The Republic of Niger

The Republic of Niger is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. It borders Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, Algeria and Libya to the north and Chad to the east. Over 80 percent of its land area (half the size of Texas) is covered by the Sahara desert.

Much of the non-desert portions of the country (south) are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. What isn't desert is mostly grasslands, and the most likely Saturniidae species that one would find in Niger would be those whose larvae feed on grasses and reeds. There are possible some treed areas in southwestern Niger.

The southern parts of Niger are naturally dominated Savannahs.

Niger's subtropical climate is mainly very hot and dry, with much desert area. In the extreme south there is a tropical climate on the edges of the Niger River basin. The terrain is predominantly desert plains and sand dunes, with flat to rolling savanna in the south and hills in the north.

Niger is divided into 7 Regions and one capital district:
Agadez Region
Diffa Region
Dosso Region
Maradi Region
Tahoua Region
Tillabéri Region
Zinder Region

Niamey (capital district)

The Urotini and the Bunaeini are earth pupators whose larvae are often used for food.
