MICRAGONE OF THE WORLD

MICRAGONE WALKER, 1855

Micragone neonubifera male courtesy of Eric van Schayck

The Micragone belong to the Tribe Micragonini of the Subfamily Saturniinae. These moths fly in Africa.

The type species is Crytogone herilla, now Micragone herilla.

Moths are generally small and lack eyespots. The forewings are relatively narrow and moderately (ansorgei) to strongly (nubifera) falcate in males.

Division of the moths into subgroups can reduce the amount of time one spends trying to do id work. The nenia subgroup consists of species which have a large, very dark brown to black region, confined to the upper half of the subterminal and terminal areas of the male forewing. The male forewing apex tends to be very produced, and the forewing outer margin, below the projection is toothed. There is a large subtrapezoidal, apical patch, usually concolourus with the median area of the costa. Many of these species are very difficult to determine without examination of genitalia or DNA barcoding analysis. Geographic location is of some help:
P ducorpsi (De Fleury, 1925), possibly limited to southwestern Cameroon: Younde area; and southeastern Nigeria; Congo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast (TB)
