ORTHOGONIOPTILUM OF THE WORLD

Orthogonioptilum adiegatum male

ORTHOGONIOPTILUM KARSCH

The Orthogonioptilum belong to the Subfamily Micragoninae of the Family Saturniidae. Most of these species fly in western and central Africa.

Although the images are not great, Philippe Darge's Saturniidae 1 is an excellent resource, complete with range maps, precise collection data (dates and locations) and images of genitalia as well as colour plates depicting the Orthogonioptilum species. He also offers French text descriptions. His work has been used to 1) confirm and add to (general, non-specific) ranges stated on various internet sites offering specimens, 2) list wingspan and flight months, and 3) update Saturniidae checklists (under construction by myself) for each of the African nations.

This book (in French only) is available from Erich Bauer, and I strongly recommend it to serious collectors of African Saturniidae and to those involved with specific research.

As images of specimens (outside of Darge's book) become available, they will be posted to this site as will food plants and any extensions of ranges or collection data, provided by members of WLSS or by others. I actively seek images and information from game reserves, lodges, insect traders/dealers, travellers and Saturniidae experts and hobbyists.

In December 2007 and January 2008 I am expanding the range data to reflect what is reported on the All Leps Barcode of Life Website.

In May of 2010, Thierry Bouyer indicates "O. adiegetum adiegetum (with) type locality Buea, Mt Cameroon; O. a. pseudadiegetum is a doubtful subspecies (not verified on series and with contradiction in [Darge's] description)." Therefore I have added supposed pseudadiegetum images to O. a adiegetum file.

P indicates an image is available.
