DISTRIBUTION:

Epiphora liberiensis (wingspan: males: 148-160mm; females: 135-162mm) is one of the few Attacini in
Ivory Coast: Adiopodoumé, Africa.

BOLD Systems lists it in Ivory Coast.

In his Catalogue of African Saturniidae, Thierry Bouyer indicates this moth is a synonym of E. boolana. If that is correct, then the moth probably has a wider range in Liberia, Guinea Conakry, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been recorded in Ivory Coast in July.

Epiphora liberiensis larvae probably feed on Citrus, Maesopsis eminii, Paullinia, Zanthoxylum macrophyllum and Fagara macrophylla.

Epiphora liberiensis female, Ivory Coast, sorry, image not available.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Epiphora liberiensis females extend a scent gland from the posterior tip of the abdomen to call in the night-flying males. The pair remains coupled until the following evening.

The wings of the female are more rounded than those of the male.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS, AND PUPAE:

The cocoon is double walled and resembles the cocoon of the Hyalphora.
