DISTRIBUTION:

The Gonimbrasia (Nudaurelia) melanops moth flies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), Africa. Thierry Bouyer confirms it also flies in Gabon, so I suspect it would also fly in the People's Republic of the Congo. It also flies in Cameroon confirmed by Sebastian Brandner capture of moth, whose id is confirmed by Thierry Bouyer.

It is often classified as Gonimbrasia melanops. Bouyer lists it in the subgenus Nudaurelia. Thierry (1999) also equates oyemensis with melanops. See additional images and data in the oyemensis file.

Lomie (East Province) is very close to the Sud Province border, so this specimen may actually be from Sud Province.

FLIGHT TIMES AND LARVAL HOSTS:

Gonimbrasia (Nudaurelia) melanops have been taken in June-July and December in southern Cameroon, indicating at least two flights.

Larvae probably feed upon Maesa alnifolia, Myrica, Pyrus malus and Prunus.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Both sexes are active at night. Males come in to lights around midnight when females are scenting.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

Pupation is in the soil in a subterranean chamber.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
