DISTRIBUTION:

Gonimbrasia (Nudaurelia) anthinoides (wingspan: males: approx. 120-135mm; females: approx. 132-140mm) flies in
southern Cameroon: Est Province: Yokadouma; and
Gabon: Haut-Ogooue: Franceville (JLA). Nigel Voaden indicates a June flight in Republic of Central Africa.

The moth above from the Republic of Central Africa was posted as Nuduarelia anthinoides in its original internet posting. It appears to be a very large moth (perhaps larger than anthinoides [little anthina]), and its location in the Republic of Central Africa lead me to think that it might more likely be Nuduarelia anthina which is very similar to anthinoides but larger with perhaps a more easterly range. Thierry Bouyer indicates this species flies in Cameroon, Gabon,
Katanga (southern Democratic Republic of the Congo),
Kenya and
probably People's Republic of the Congo and
Burundi.

Concerning Nudaurelia anthina / Nudaurelia anthinoides, Rougeot wrote that in Nudaurelia anthinoides the internal line of the forewing is concave in the cell below the costa. That character is much more evident in the Morgan-Brown image (although improperly identified) than in this image by Ken Thorne. SCI reports it in Ivory Coast, and if that record is correct, it probably also flies in Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, and possibly wet of Ivory Coast. Thierry Bouyer writes, "Nudaurelia anthinoides does not fly into eastern Tanzania. The Ken Thorne images may be anthinoides or anthina."

Thierry Bouyer (April 2005) indicates the above moth in not G. anthinoides
(but one of the Tanzanian endemics)

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

The Gonimbrasia anthinoides moth has been recorded in the months of April and June in southern Cameroon and Franceville, Gabon, and in August and November in eastern Gabon, indicating at least three broods. It may also fly at other times.

Larval hosts are unknown.

Lomie (East Province) is very close to the Sud Province border, so this specimen may actually be from Sud Province.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Eclosion is from underground pupae.

Both sexes fly at night with the males coming in to lights around midnight, the scenting time of the females.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
