DISTRIBUTION:

Nudaurelia jamesoni, (wingspan: males: approximately 93-102mm; females: probably larger), flies in
Cameroon: Elone (Sud Province (SB)), Mt. Cameroon (South West Province (FL)); and in the
Central African Republic. It is probably also found in Est Province: Lomi (SB), Cameroon and across southern Cameroon through Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, to at least
Ivory Coast: Mont Tonkoui (March) and Forêt de Yapo (December) (SCI).

Thierry Bouyer and Jean-Louis Albert report it in
Gabon: Haut-Ogooue: Franceville (JLA) and
Thierry also reports it in
Democratic Republic of the Congo, and I suspect it also flies in
People's Republic of the Congo.

The very dark form, moslty depicted on this page, is called aethiops.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

I suspect Nudaurelia jamesoni moths are on the wing in June-July (SB) and January. In Ivory Coast it has been recorded in March and December. There are probably three to four broods each year.

Jean-Louis Albert has taken them in October in Franceville, Gabon, so there are probably three to four broods annually.

Foodplants are unknown.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Nudaurelia jamesoni females attract males with an airbourne pheromone.

Thierry Bouyer (April 2005) indicates this specimen below, courtesy of Heinz Rothacker is a female Gonimbrasia (Nudaurelia) jamesoni.

Lomie (East Province) is very close to the Sud Province border, so this specimen may actually be from Sud Province.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
