DISTRIBUTION:

Lobobunaea rosea thorei (forewing length = 52-55mm, females slightly larger than males) flies in Africa:
Gabon;
Congo; and
Democaratic Republic of the Congo. This species is smaller than both nominate rosea and rosea werneri. Basic ground color is reddish brown.

Both Pinhey and Bouyer equate this moth with Lobobunaea rosea. It is left here simply because one may come across it as thorei or rosea thorei in older publications.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Lobobunaea rosea thorei moths are probably on the wing from November to March.

Larvae probably feed upon Acocanthera, Anisophyllea laurina, Apodytes dimidiata, Eucalyptus, Eugenia cordata, Rhus longifolia and Uapaca nitida..

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Lobobunaea rosea thorei females attract males (more falcate wings) with an airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE AND PUPAE:

The pronunciation of scientific names is troublesome for many. The "suggestion" at the top of the page is merely a suggestion. It is based on commonly accepted English pronunciation of Greek names and/or some fairly well accepted "rules" for latinized scientific names.

The suggested pronunciations, on this page and on other pages, are primarily put forward to assist those who hear with internal ears as they read.

There are many collectors from different countries whose intonations and accents would be different.

The genus name Lobobunaea, is from the Greek and refers to a lobed hill-dweller. The genus specimen type is Lobobunaea phaedusa, males of which have a valve with a subapical lobe. The hindwings are also lobed at the anal angle. It may also be a montane species.

The species name rosea refers to the rosy-pinkish cast to this species.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
