In the regions around Lakato this species is symatric with Maltagorea mariae and Maltagorea pseudomariae.
Maltagorea rostaingi has a diffuse band of pale pink scaling just outside the dark, distinct, very straight, preapical postmedian line.
Ground colour is a uniform reddish orangey-brown. Cell markings are tiny. The hindwing has a faint, dentate pm line and some small dark spotting near the anal angle.
In males of this species, the forewing pm area (submarginal/marginal area) is devoid of any dark markings.
The female has some dark spotting in the forewing pm area as well as more extensive spotting in the same area of the hindwing.
