DISTRIBUTION:

Orthogonioptilum piersoni (wingspan: males: 58-63mm; females: 72-76mm) flies in
Gabon: Woleu-Ntem: Mitzic (Zomoko in northern Gabon), Ogooue-Ivindo, probably Estuaire;
southern Cameroon: South West: Limbe, probably Littoral and Sud; and
Equatorial Guinea.

The male forewing is fairly falcate. The upper side of the body and the wings are a greenish brown. The pm line and the transverse line are well marked. The forewing discal area is generally very dark. This same colour extends to the well marked lunulaires and beyond the pm line to the submarginal area from the apex to the anal angle.

Along the costa on the outer third of the forewing there is a large brownish-yellow area extending to the transverse line. This same colour appears in the basal area and is even lighter in a large wedge from the inner margin, centered along the pm line from the dark submarginal area to the equally dark transverse line.

The forewing has but a vestigial "window" while the hindwing has two or three slightly better marked points of light.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

This moth flies in February, April, July and probably October-November.

Orthogonioptilum piersoni larval hosts are unknown.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Darge describes the female as a moth having very falcate forewings with the apex greatly extended. The colour is uniform and very brown like that of the male. There are three "windows" on each forewing, average in size, without the dark scaled small island.

On the hindwing, there is one large pear-shaped window, bridged over by one much smaller window.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.

The pronunciation of scientific names is troublesome for many. The "suggestion" at the top of the page is merely a suggestion.

There are many collectors from different countries whose intonations and accents would be different.

The genus name Orthogonioptilum refers to the nearly right angle at the anal angle of the forewing.

The species name is honourific for Pierson.
