March 16 to April 15, 2011

Hi All,

Spring is almost upon us. Once again I will be offering eggs of many Saturniidae species, with eggs being supplied to US destinations via US breeders who ship for me under my shipping label. Either I or other Canadian breeders, who will also ship under my label, will be shipping eggs to Canadian destinations. Not all species will be available in Canada. Not all species will be available overseas.

Please visit 2011 Saturniidae eggs: species, prices, payment methods and policies before ordering any eggs.

For my own records: Alabama luna eggs (DB) became available March 24, 2011; polyphemus eggs (DB) became available March 25, Cecropia eggs (DB) became available March 28. These species and many more will be available on and off throughout the season. Be sure to include your shipping address in the text of the email when placing an order.

Hemileuca peninsularis eggs are laid in rings of 25-35 eggs/ring, or even many more as evidenced in this image from David Wikle. David writes, "I believe the predominant Mesquite down there is Prosopis velutina, not P. juliflora. Last instar larvae can be found in Sept/Oct there. Not sure when they hatch out, but Chris Conlan says they take forever to finish up. They eat opportunistically (multiple hosts) in the last instars, like many other arid habitat Hemileucas."

Reinhard Foerster of Dos de Mayo, Misiones, Argentina, is rearing larvae of Dysdaemonia brasiliensis on Chorisia speciosa. It is first time larvae of this species have been depicted on WLSS, and the foodplant is a new one. Hope Reinhard has success rearing them through. Reinhard sells specimens. His email is available on his contacts page.

On March 31, 2011, Jim writes, "Attached is a shot of a last instar C. hercules. The adults were very common this year, and I just couldn't resist rearing a few.

Antoine Guyonnet forwarded an image of a Gonimbrasia godarti male taken March 14, 2011, in Yokadouma, Est Province, southeastern Cameroon, by Michelle Constanza. It is first time a live specimen of this species appears on WLSS, and I believe it may be first confirmation of this species in Cameroon although Thierry Bouyer, who confirmed the id, indicated it might well be present in Cameroon as well as from better known locations in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Many thanks to Dave Moore and Dave Rolfe who provide an image of a bilateral gynandromorph of Saturnia pavonia. The image is linked from the aberrations page as well as from the pavonia file.

Dave Rolfe has also provided some additional images of spread speciemens of Argema kuhnei.

My sister-in-law, Jackie Roop, is an experienced rug hooker of considerable repute in Atlantic Canada. She recently sent me this image of a partially finished "butterfly" rug she is currently hooking.

Hooked Rug: "Butterfly"

Jackie does her own designs and writes, "This is a wall hanging size, 16" x 20", hand hooked in 100% pure wool. Offers accepted, usual price is $250.00 US. This is a one of a kind art work. No two of the same pattern exist, as I designed and am hooking this by myself."

Jackie resides in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. You can contact her by email if interested: Jackie Roop.

Jackie also hooks much larger sizes. Most of her work is traditional (of her own design), but you might be able to convince/commission her to do something with one of your photos. She also does a great job with cats!

Some of her work is on display at

Sphingidae Express

I am very much interested in receiving and displaying images of Sphingidae adults, eggs, larvae and pupae, even of the common species.

Please always send data to include date and location, at least to county level.

I would very much like to continue creation of County/Province level checklists for USA and Canada, and am also very interested in refining checklists for Central and South America.

Peter Bruce-Jones has been sending me some very nice images with data from Junin, Peru, and Gregory Nielsen has been sending me very nice images from Meta, Colombia.

Catocala Capers

Reinhart Roehrig has just sent me very nice images (recto and verso) of Catocala residua. It is the first time I am able to display the underside of residua. Reinhart has also sent a nice image of Catocala ilia form conspicua.
