TAXONOMY:

Superfamily: Bombycoidea, Latreille, 1802
Family: Saturniidae, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Subfamily: Saturniinae, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Tribe: Saturniini, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Genus: Antheraea, Hubner, 1819

DISTRIBUTION:

Antheraea scida (wingspan: males: 150mm; females: 151-160mm // mfwl: 70-80mm; ffwl: 85-90mm) flies in
Vietnam: Ngoc Linh Mt., Kontum env., Kon Tum Province and Di Linh Mt., Lam Dong Province, at elevations from 900-1700m.

It probably also flies in the Vietnam provinces of Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Dak Nong.

A. (A.) scida is a member of the Antheraea roylei-subgroup of the frithi-group (sensu Nässig 1991). Scida is differentiated from Antheraea vietnamensis, Brechlin & Paukstadt, 2010, by the more acute Fw. apex in the male, the tiny inner translucent part of Fw. and Hw. ocelli in both sexes, and the typical intense orange brown median line on ventral sides of A. scida.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in May, June, August and October. There are probably additional flight months. Host plants are unknown as of this writing.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

OVA, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larvae of Antheraea scida probably resemble others of the genus Antheraea.

The species name is indicative of the typical reddish brown line (sciva) on the ventral surface of the wings.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
