DISTRIBUTION:

The rare Antheraea jana moth (wingspan: males: 104-123mm; females: probably larger) flies in lowland rainforests in Sundaland, Andamans and Burma. Images on this page are from Indonesia, Jawa (Java), Malang area. It has also been reported from West Jawa Province, Banten Province, Central Jawa Province and East Jawa (Java) Province.

Marc Fischer confirms them from Balongrejo Village, Sugihwaras Municipality, District Bojonegoro, East Java Province.

Possibly this is the same moth classified as andamana by Moore.

The species ground colour appears to be quite variable based on the David Rolfe images for E. Java.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males, whose wings are more falcate than those of the females, use antennae to detect female scent which is distributed into the wind. Males fly into the wind in a zigzag pattern to detect the pheromone and subsequently locate the female.
