TAXONOMY:

Superfamily: Bombycoidea, Latreille, 1802
Family: Saturniidae, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Subfamily: Saturniinae, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Tribe: Saturniini, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Genus: Antheraea, Hubner 1819
Subgenus: Antheraeopsis, Wood-Mason, 1886

DISTRIBUTION:

Antheraeopsis youngi (wingspan: males: 130-150mm; females: ??) flies in
Sumatra: Aceh, Langsa, Bratagi, Dolok Merangir, E. Padang, Bukit Subang, Lampung, S. Seletan, S. Jambi;
Borneo: Sabah; and
Malaysia: West Malaysia (Pahang);
East Malaysia (Brunei, Sarawak); Sabah: Mt. Trusmadi, 1200m.

It is also reported from Jawa (Java): West Jawa Province, Banten Province and East Jawa Province.

In Sumatra it is generally reported at elevations between 180 and 1350m. Holloway (1976) lists A. assamensis from Borneo as a lowland species, but it is A. youngi that flies there. Lampe, 1984, lists this moth as a subspecies of A. assamensis from western Malaysia, but it has been elevated to full species status.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

In western Malaysia it has been taken in February-May, August and October-November-December, suggesting at least three broods.

In Sumatra specimens have been taken in January-February, May-June, August-September-October, again suggesting at least three broods.

John Kamps reports an April flight on Mt. Trusmadi, Sabah, Malaysia.

Teemu Klemetti offers the following regarding flight on peninsular Malaysia: "Antheraeas flew for the whole period 8th of March through 26th of May. They may have peaks March-May and October-December - males 1:00-5:00 am, females 8:00pm (rosieri) or midnight (youngi, ulrichbroschi)."

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use highly developed antennae to detect female scent which is distributed into the wind. Males fly into the wind in a zigzag pattern to detect the pheromone and subsequently locate the female.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
