TAXONOMY:

Superfamily: Bombycoidea, Latreille, 1802
Family: Saturniidae, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Subfamily: Saturniinae, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Tribe: Saturniini, Boisduval, [1837] 1834
Genus: Cricula, Walker, 1855

DISTRIBUTION:

Cricula separata (wingspan: males: 60-73mm; females: 66-81mm) flies in
Sumatra: Type locality: Indonesia, western Sumatra, Mt. Sanggul, 1250-1450 m. Mt. Sanggul is in South Province. Specimens have also been taken on Mt. Kerinci, West Province, Sumatra, at 1200m. I am pretty sure Cricula separata is synonymous with Cricula elaeziosumatrana, Brechlin, 2010. I do not know which name has precedence.

Hyaline spots on male forewing can be quite variable in size and number.

The specimens denoted as separata come from elevation of 1200-1450m from South and West provinces; the specimens denoted as eleaziosumatrana come from West and North provinces. Both look very much like the specimen I have on the Cricula sumatrensis page.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

The holotype male was taken June-July, 2007, by S. Jakl. Specimens have also been taken in March. There are probably additional flight months.

Larvae will probably accept fruit tree foliage: apple, cherry, pear.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of the abdomen to call in the night-flying males.

Males use well-developed antennae to track the airbourne pheromone.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
