DISTRIBUTION:

Loepa finnackermanni (approximate wingspan: males: 84-87mm; females: 87mm // forewing length: males: 46-56mm; females: 50-56mm) flies in
Sulawesi: Sulawesi Tenggara, Melia Benoa resort.

This is a relatively small species with large oblong forewing ocelli and a slightly concave outer margin. The apex is not produced.

A relatively solid, slightly concave subterminal line seems inwardly adorned with a series of rain drops.

This species has been confused often with minahassae, but finnackermanni is a deeper yellow with strong black markings as well as the features mentioned above while minahassae is a paler yellow, with much lighter lines, and the ocellus of minahassae is much rounder.

The following four images were originally sent to me as minahassae, before finnackermanni was described. I believe they are all finnackermanni.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

I suspect this species has multiple broods. Specimens have been collected in November.

Cissus, grape and Virginia creeper would likely prove to be suitable hosts.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females call at night. Males fly into the wind and track the pheromone plume with their sophisticated antennae.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.

The species name is probably honourific for a collector or friend, with last name of Finnackermann.
