DISTRIBUTION:

Loepa formosensis (wingspan 75-90 mm) flies in China and in the Yangmingshan National Park in Taiwan.

Stephan Naumann indicates this moth is sometimes incorrectly classified as a subspecies of Loepa megacore. It is also sometimes incorrectly classified as a subspecies of Loepa katinka. It is sufficiently different to have full species status.

Yangmingshan National Park, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

There is a flight in September; it is likely that this species is multiple brooded with moths are on the wing from February until November. Larvae feed on Java Grape (Tetrastigma formosanum) and Ampelopsis brevipedunculata.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Adults emerge in the early evening and fly rather weekly at night.

Females have larger bodies, fractionally finer antennae, and much more rounded and larger wings than males.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larvae are dark, have urticating hairs and light coloured triangular patches on the sides.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
