DISTRIBUTION:

The Loepa mirandula moth (wingspan: 100-110mm) Taiwan.

This is "a new species of the miranda-group of the genus Loepa from Taiwan (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae).

Nachr. entomol. Ver. Apollo (N.F.) 21 (3): 153-162.

Etymology: mirandula is derived from "small miranda", which refers to the smaller size of the Taiwanese specimens compared to that of the Himalayan L. miranda.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Loepa mirandula flies in August-September. There are likely other peak flights throughout the year.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Adults emerge in the early evening and fly rather weekly at night.

Females have larger bodies, fractionally finer antennae, and much more rounded and larger wings than males.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larvae are dark, have urticating hairs and light coloured triangular patches on the sides.
