DISTRIBUTION:

Saturnia (Rinaca) chinensis luteoshaanxiana (wingspan: males: 64-78mm; females: // forewing length: males: 33-40mm) flies in
China: Shaanxi: Taibai Shan Mts., Tsinling Mts., Houzbenzi, 33º51'N, 107º419'E, at elevations near 1600 m.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Adults are on the wing in September. There are probably additional fall flight months.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

This species probably overwinters in the egg stage.

The species/suspecies names, chinensis luteoshaanxiana, indicate a close association with chinensis and a yellowish tinge with type location in Shaanxi, China.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
