DISTRIBUTION:

Saturnia (Rinaca) ruda (wingspan: males: 70-85mm; female: 78-85mm // forewing length: males: 36-43mm; females: 40-43) flies in China: Sichuan, S of Kangding, 2800 m., near Menghugang; Erling Shan Mountains, 2100-3200m; Xiling Xue Shan, 2000m.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Adults are on the wing in October and November. There are possibly additional fall flight months (late September or early December??). Moths have been taken at elevations of 2000-3200m.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

I expect this species overwinters in the egg stage.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
