DISTRIBUTION:

Saturnia (Rinaca) saldaitisi (wingspan: males: 72-74mm; females: // forewing length: males 37mm; females:) flies in
China: western Sichuan near Xinduquiao, at elevations near 3500m.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Adults are on the wing in October. There are probably additional flight months in the fall.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

This species probably overwinters in the egg stage, with larvae hatching in the spring once the weather warms and foliage becomes available.

The species name, saldaitis, is honourific for Aidas Saldaitis of Vilnius, Lithuania.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
