DISTRIBUTION:

Samia burica (forewing length: 70mm) flies on Buru Island, North Moluccas, Indonesia.

The name is given to indicate the collecting location: Buru Island, Moluccas. Dr. Brechlin indicates this species closely resembles S. naumanni, S. naessigi and S. ceramensis.

From Buru Island the following Saturniidae are now (2007) reported: Attacus crameri, Antheraea rumphii, Cricula trifenestrata serama, Syntherata innescens, Neodiphthera buruensis, Samia burica, with Antheraea rumphii buruensis being synonymized with the nominate subspecies. There is probably another Antheraea species from the helferi group.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Larval hosts are unknown.

This species probably broods continuously, but thus far it has only been recorded in July.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females call in the night-flying males with an airbourne pheromone released from the tip of the abdomen.
