DISTRIBUTON:

Saturnia pinratanai (wingspan: males: approx. 66mm; females: 95-108mm) flies in Chiang Mai and Doi Inthanon in northern Thailand at elevations near 1700m.

According to Stefan Naumann, reports of this species from southern Thailand are in error.

The male of S. (E.) pinratanai is well distinguished from pyretorum and cameronensis by the falcate apex of forewings, and by the strongly darkened coloration of wings and antennae." Ulrich Paukstadt

Male wingspan of 66mm is much smaller than wingspan of 108mm for female

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.

The pronunciation of scientific names is troublesome for many. The "suggestion" at the top of the page is merely a suggestion. It is based on commonly accepted English pronunciation of Greek names and/or some fairly well accepted "rules" for latinized scientific names.

The suggested pronunciations, on this page and on other pages, are primarily put forward to assist those who hear with internal ears as they read.

There are many collectors from different countries whose intonations and accents would be different.

"Saturnia" is derived from the Latin Saturn. In Roman mythology, Saturn was a god of fertility and agriculture. He was commonly identified with the Greek god Cronus (Kronos), and there is an interesting story that explains how Cronus was transformed into Saturn.

The species name, pinratanai, is probably honourific for Brother A. Pinratana of Bangkok.
