Panama Ceratocampinae Comparison Table II

The descriptions in the right hand columns pertain to males of the Ceratocampinae species of the following genera: Citheronia; Citheronioides; Eacles; Schausiella; known from Panama. The provinces listed for Panama are the ones cited by Lemaire. Many of these moths are also found to the north in Costa Rica and to the south in Columbia so there is probably a presence in most provinces and oher administrative units.

Citheronia

Citheronia bellavista male

Citheronia bellavista female

Chiriqui, Canal Zone.

Thorax marked with strongly contrasting red and yellow lines. Upper two yellow, intraneural markings are much smaller than in lobesis.
Note strong presence of irregular, orange, subterminal line. Red covering of veins not nearly as broad as in volcan.

Citheronia volcan male

Citheronia volcan female

Chiriqui: Boquete. Note heavy red coating on forewing veins; smaller orangey-yellow cell marking.
Note very weak, non-contrasting subterminal markings on the forewing. Most similar to bellavista in Panama, but bellavista has a prominent, orange, irregular subterminal line on the forewing.

Citheronia lobesis lobesis male

Citheronia lobesis lobesis female

Canal Zone.

The very large, yellow, forewing apical patch, extending almost to the outer margin, allows for qucik identification of this species.

Citheronia phoronea male

Citheronia phoronea female

Canal Zone; Colon.

There is almost always a heavy suffusion of purple on the two largest, uppermost intraneural yellow, spots in the postmedian area.

Most of the thorax is also a dark purple.

Citheronioides

Citheronioides collaris male

Citheronioides collaris female

Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro. Dark greyish-purple thorax and almost uniform dark forewing with yellow apical patch and other small yellow markings.

Straight to slightly concave forewing outer margin in male, not slightly convex as in Citheronia lobesis.

Eacles

Eacles imperialis anchicayensis male

Eacles imperialis anchicayensis fem.

Male (left) from Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Perhaps it is E. i. anchicayensis, known from western Colombia & western Ecuador, It could be present in Panama. It might be Eacles i. decoris or Eacles i. cacicus. Lemaire did not list any Eacles imperialis subspecies from Panama. Cacicus larvae seem to be much more hairy than either anchicayensis or decoris.

Eacles imperialis decoris male

Eacles imperialis decoris female

Male (left) is Nicaraguan; it should be Eacles imperialis decoris. Fw apex seems more rounded, and outer margin less concave compared to image from Panama. Both subspecies, decoris & anchicayensis, probably display enough variability that one could pass for the other. Another subspecies, listed by Lemaire as E. i. cacicus ranges from Venezuela to eastern Brazil. It might be present in Panama.

E. masoni centralamericana male

E. m. centralamericana female

Panama: Bocas del Toro; Colon from 1100-2120m.

Eacles ormondei ormondei male

Eacles ormondei ormondei female

Forewings have extensive orange scaling with lilac in subterminal area restricted to upper 1/2 of wing.

If hindwings are visible, note small lilac intraneural bars along outer margin.

Eacles penelope male

Eacles penelope female

Note two distinct pale lilac circles on lower thorax. Ocelli on all wings are relatively large purple circles filled with greyish-white. Pm line on each wing is thick, straight, not dentate.

Schausiella

Schausiella denhezorum male

Schausiella denhezorum female

Bocas del Toro.

Strong, contrasting black pm line is broadly preapical. The male fw apex is pointed and the forewing outer margin is slightly concave.

Schausiella moinieri male

Schausiella moinieri female

Chiriqui; montane species.

In the male, the pm line is not distinct, but more concolourous with surrounding areas. The outer margin is slghtly convex. The female is quite similar to the denhezorum female, but perhaps the pm line is slightly straighter in moinieri with a more distinct inturn at the costa.

Schausiella subochreata male

Schausiella subochreata female

Canal Zone.

Forewing ground colour is almost a uniform dull brown with the pm line scarcely visible.

There is a light pinkish suffusion in the outer portion of the upper median area. The cell marking is very weak, only slightly more orange than surrounding area.
