DISTRIBUTION:

Automeris petrovae moth (wingspan: males: 69mm; females: ?? // forewing length: males 35-39mm; females: 40mm) flies in
Mexico: Durango; Sinaloa at elevations around 1900-1960m.

This species is very similar to A. beutelspacheri from Oaxaca and A. lemairei from Guerrero and Oaxaca, but A. petrovae males have darker black lines and a thicker black median line on the hindwing. The hindwing ocellus also seems larger in petrovae, filling a greater portion of the median field.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Moths have been taken in June-July-August. There are probably additional flight months.

Automeris petrovae AT female, 73mm, San Dimas, Durango, Mexico,
July-August 2011, 1920m, on my home computer only.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males. Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larvae probably pupate in a very flimsy cocoon spun amongst leaf litter.

The species name, petrovae, signifies as specimen type location in Lempira, Honduras.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticiated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
