DISTRIBUTION:
Automeris sandimasiana
moth (wingspan: males: 70mm; females: ?? // forewing length: males: 35-36 mm; females: ) flies in
Mexico: Durango: San Dimas at elevations around 1920m.
This species is very similar to Automeris cecrops and Automeris cecrojalicensis from Jalisco, Mexico.
The whitish scales on facing sides of the forewing am and pm lines are quite pronounced in this grey-brown species, and the yellow
of the hindwing median field is restricted to the outer two-thirds of the relatively large ocellus.
FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:
Moths have been taken in July-August. There are probably additional flight months.
ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:
Females extend a scent gland from the tip of their abdomens to "call" the males.
Males use their antennae to hone in on the airbourne pheromone.
EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:
Larvae probably pupate in a very flimsy cocoon spun amongst leaf litter.
The species name, sandimasiana, signifies as specimen type location in San Dimas, Mexico.
Larval Food Plants
It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the anticiated foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive.
Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
