Hi All,
In Canada I am completely sold out of cocoons and pupae.
I shipped cocoons to US WLSS members in late October while I was in New Jersey. As of December 8 I still have the following available for shipping within the US: luna, polyphemus, promethea, homogena cocoons. That is all that I have available.
If you wish to place an order, please include the following three items in your email to me:
1) Complete shipping address
2) Species and quantities desired
3) Your preferred payment method: I can accept personal checks (preferred); International money orders in US funds; Cashier's checks in US funds; Paypal in US funds.
With paypal there is a 4% Paypal transaction fee.
Here is what is left from the Fall 2015 Pricelist:
Because I still have a large inventory of luna and polyphemus, and a couple of US breeders who regularly supply me also have surplus numbers of those two species, I am offering them at reduced prices as a Christmas sale starting December 1. I am offering them to members at reduced price now until the end of December. Prices are listed below:
Actias luna reduced to 4.50/cocoon to 4.25 if you order ten or more;
Agapema homogena $7.50/cocoon; seldom offered; yes; at reduced prices this year as there is a larger supply; seldom offered, nice cocoons
Antheraea polyphemus reduced to 4.50/cocoon to $4.25 if you order ten or more;
Callosamia promethe reduced to 4.50/cocoon to 4.25 if you order ten or more.
Shipping and handling on all orders within US will be $9.00 whether you order a single item or 100 items, etc.
Smaller orders will be shipped First Class Mail with a tracking number. Larger orders will be shipped Priority.
If you wish to place an order, do not send payment yet, but please do send right away the following information in an email back to me:
1) Your complete shipping address
2) Species and quantities of each that you would like to receive
3) Your method of payment personal check (preferred) or paypal. With Paypal there is a paypal fee of 4% that would be added to your total price,
and that can increase the price rather dramatically if you place a large order. I can also accept international postal money orders or bank international
money orders in US funds, but please note they have to be international money orders.
Do not send any payment until I have confirmed your order.

I have received the two 2015 Entomo-Satsphingia journals that deal with Saturniidae, and am working on updating files and creating new files for the genera/species covered.
Right now I am working on the new Eubergia species and will shortly create some comparison plates for this genus.
I have just moved some images from Ulf Drechsel to the Eubergia altoparanensis file, and possibly will be moving some additional images.
I hope to have Automerella, Aglia files updated by end of today, December 8, based on journals, and I have updated Eacles files based on info sent to me by Ryan Saint Laurent.

I have updated the Hylesia metapyrrha and Hylesia nigricans files with some additional images of spread moths, and for the first time for both those species, have incorportated images of eggs and larvae. It is interesting to me that both the Hylesia and the Eubergia females lay their eggs in large masses affixed to twigs. The eggs are covered with a dense layer of abdominal, urticating hairs, which, in the case of the Hylesia species, can cause problems wth allergic reactions like dermatitis. I suspect the same is true for the Eubergia species.
It would not be good to come in contact with these hairs or breathe them in as moths also lose them in flight, and that could be a problem as the moths fly in to lights.

I recently was asked to identify two live female Antheraea from Palopo, South Sulawesi. I have posted them to the Antheraea cordifolia file. There are several Antheraea species form that area, and one of them, A. puncakensis, is as yet undescribed, Possibly one or both of them are puncakensis. A. paukstadtorum is another possibility, although I think paukstadtorum has a larger, rounder forewing hyaline area, and I have moved an Eric Van Schayck image from the cordifolia file t the paukstadtorum file for that reason.

I am still working on moving WLSS to a new location which will not require a login and password. I am also relocating Kirby Wolfe (done), Leroy Simon, Thibaud Decaens, Bernhard Wenczel sites/files, etc., to new subdirectories to comply with webspace provider mandates with regard to the number of files that I can have in a root directory or in subsequent subdirectories. Progress has been slow but steady. Now that rearing season and bulk of sales seasons are largely over, I will have more time to update sites and move files to their new locations.

My oldest daughter, Lindsay, has begun marketing ear rings featuring laminated moth wings, mostly of males hatched from my breeding stock or from wild males that have flown in to my caged female Saturniidae or Sphingidae. She is pictured below wearing Hyalophora columbia and Actia luna.
Lindsay Oehlke wearing Hyalophora columbia.
Lindsay Oehlke wearing Actias luna.
Lindsay also has some Costa Rican butterflies on display from the butterfly house at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company. Wings are carefully separated from deceased specimens, laminated and cut out. Holes are punched-out in appropriate places in the laminating film so the wings are free swinging from their hooks. Single or double wings can be purchased for each ear in a set.
The jewellry is durable, quite eyecatching and has proven very popular at a recent showing in Charlottetown, PEI, Canada. Contact Lindsay directly via Lindsay Oehlke.
Lindsay is now selling these items on-line and at craft fairs (Etsy) as opposed to having them in craft stores. Prices are reduced as stores are no longer getting their share and there is no obligation on Lindsay's part to reduce prices. If you are interested, I can bring the ear rings with me to New Jersey and in some cases, (larger order) ship the ear rings in same box as cocoons.

Sphingidae Express
Tony James recently sent me some Sphingidae images from St. Lucia. Among them is a live image (first time live image depicted on Sphingidae of the Americas) of Eumorpha vitis fuscata.
Nicolas Palacios Prado, PhD., recently sent me two very nice images of a Manduca sexta subspecies from Paine, Chile. I believe they are of Manduca sexta caestra, and this is the first time live adults of that species are displayed on the Sphingidae of the Americas website. I have updated the Chile page and the Manduca sexta caestra file.

This website has been created and is maintained by Bill Oehlke without government or institutional financial assistance. All expenses, ie., text reference support material, webspace rental from Bizland and 1&1, computer repairs/replacements, backups systems, software for image adjustments (Adobe Photoshop; L-View), ftp software, anti-virus protection, scanner, etc. are my own. The one-time-life-time membership fee that is charged at the time of the registration covers most of those expenses.
I very much appreciate all the many images that have been sent to me, or of which I have been granted permission to copy and post from other websites. All images on this site remain the property of respective photographers.
If you would like to contribute to the maintenace of this website by sending a contribution to

your donation would be much appreciated and would be used for
1) paying for webspace rental;
2) paying for computer maintenance and software upgrades;
3) purchases of additional text reference material (journals and books) in an effort to stay current with new species;
I also hope to expand the North American Catocala site as well as the Sphingidae of the Americas site, to worldwide sites, and that will require additional funds for reference materials, etc. Both of those site are linked from your WLSS homepage.
If you are mailing a check from USA, please use $1.25 postage (2015 rate). Donations can also be made through Paypal via the button below.
Donations are not required to maintain your standing as a WLSS member, nor do they gain you any preferencial treatment with regard to livestock and/or supplies (sleeves), compared to other WLSS members. All WLSS members get first crack at my annual offerings and get an approximate discount of 10% as compared to non-members.
I do usually ask donors if they have any special requests for information on WLSS, and I try to accomodate when appropriate or within my ability to do so.
