"Mothly Newsletter"

Hi All,

Thanks to all who sent me info about flight times for Antheraea polyphemus and oculea. Please send more, especially from the southern states and Canada. Summaries are available through polyphemus article or members' articles section on site.

Received this on February 24 from a non-member:
"Today my wife and I saw this moth outside a laundromat in Naples, Fl at about 1 PM EDT. It was our first observation of this beautiful creature and quite exciting for us, especially my wife. It seemed to be disoriented or groggy, but when we left it, it seemed to be OK hanging onto a branch of a hedge. I just thought you might like to know of this sighting."

I have just completed "State by State" listings for all U.S. species. Any data that you send for any species can now easily be added for the benefit of all.

I have posted an extensive listing of eggs available from Martin Jagelka of Slovakia in the Eggs Available Section. Check it out.

I have also posted a listing of overwintering Saturniidae eggs from Shin-ichi Ohshima of Japan

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Special thanks goes to Tony Pittaway and Bernhard Wenczel, who are primary sources, and to Martin Jagelka (Slovakia and Czech Republic), Kurt Himmelbauer (Austria and Italy) and Mario Ioppolo (Italy) for their help with active checklists for Europe, Eurasia and Northern Africa. Maps are also included in the new Country by Country Checklists Section.

***************Coming for Christmas!***************

Christmas of 2003 is a long way off but I have set it as a goal for first release of cd of WLSS. I did a "cd burn" from my home backup files the other day and it turned out beautiful. Images and pages load up instantaneously!

I must respect the promises made to many photographers who have sent me high resolution images; I will only release those images at resolution of 72 as per display on internet site. It is going to take quite a while to resize the many images all into one directory file so that I can do a "burn". I expect the price of the cd will be $15.00 - $25.00 U.S. for members and will only be available to members.

I have contacted most of the "primary image contributors" and response has been very positive.

There are many members who have contributed smaller amounts of images/information. Unless I hear otherwise, I am assuming I have your permission to use images with credit to you. I will, however, try to contact everyone directly about image use.

I will be asking a few individuals to do do preliminary checks on complimentary cds before doing the release to members.

********COUNTRY BY COUNTRY CHECKLISTS********

The Southeast Asia section is now linked from the main page; most country by country checklists are now active. The European and Eurasian checklists are also now active or shortly will be.

++++++++PUBLICATIONS++++++++++++++++++

Thibaud Decaens has made an interesting suggestion:

"One thing that would be nice to have on the web page is a list of publications on Saturniidae. What do you think? I can provide a list of the few publication I have yet published with an abstract of each one, then interested persons may ask me by mail for reprints..."

I say, "Send me any lists you have and I will begin posting."

Thibaud's first and second "abstracts" have been posted in the new "Publications Section". Pictures of new Automeris and Dirphiopsis species are available.

Membership access is at

http://www.insectcompany.com/silkmoth/kurthi.htm

No password or login is necessary.

Please remember to keep access information confidential as I wish to put new registration fees toward purchase of Lemaire's new book on the Hemileucinae. The book is expensive (around $350.00), but extremely well done according to all reports I have read.

I would also ask that you encourage other Saturniidae enthusiasts to visit the introduction to the WORLD'S LARGEST SATURNIIDAE SITE at http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/indexos.htm

The site will continue to grow and I believe there is nothing comparable to it on the internet.

Click on reload or restore if it doesn't load up first time.

Thanks again to Clive Pratt of the Insect Company for hosting the site. Clive offers dried specimens of any insects and has an extensive listing of Saturniidae.

********NEWSLETTERS:***********

The Mothly Newsletter (not a typo) will be sent out monthly via email.

If you do not wish to receive the newsletter, let me know and I will remove your name from the newsletter mailing list. Same applies to "Sphinx Express" for the fast-fliers' enthusiasts.

I am now using a new mailout system that saves me a considerable amount of time. I group members by states/provinces/countries and send out group mailings instead of individual mailings.

The only possible "problem" with this system is it provides your email address to the 5-15 other members in your group. If this is a problem for you, let me know and I will remove your name from the group list and do an individual mailout for you.

Membership continues to grow and I now archive all editions of the "Mothly Newsletter" on site. That may provide an interesting historical overview of the site's development and will allow new members to "catch up" on things they might have missed.
