Saturniidae of Monaco

Female Saturnia pavonia ligurica courtesy of Mario Ioppolo.

Two Saturniidae species are generally listed for Monaco.

Saturnia ligurica

Saturnia pyri

The tiny, sunny Principality of Monaco is a sovereign and independent state whose 4100 meter southern coastline is on the Mediterranean Sea. To the east, west and north, Monaco is bordered by several communes of the French Department of the Alpes-Maritimes.

Winters are mile (average in January and February : 8.2°) and summers are moderately warm (average in July and August : 25.5°). The average temperature for the year is 16.31°.

I suspect Saturnia ligurica would be on the wing from February-April, and the much larger Saturnia pyri would be on the wing in April-May, both species being single-brooded.
