September 16, 2016 to October 15, 2016

Hi All,

On PEI on September 26, I took in my last three sleeves, housing Antheraea polyphemus on red maple. There was still a single healthy larva feeding in each of two of the sleeves. I left those caterpillars to fend for themselves as I harvested the cocoons. I have already shipped out about twenty orders to Canadian customers. We had light snow showers in colder areas of the province at night on September 25.

Here are prices for Canadian livestock for 2016:

Actias luna $5.00 Canadian; still good numbers left in Canada
Antheraea polyphemus $5.50 Canadian; still good numbers left in Canada
Callosamia promethea $5.00 Canadian; about 6 left in Canada
Dryocampa rubicunda $4.00 Canadian; now sold out in Canada or spoken for from Canada
Hyalophora cecropia $7.00 Canadian; now sold out in Canada
Hyalophora columbia $7.00 Canadian; now sold out in Canada
Samia cynthia at $6.00 Canadian. about twenty left in Canada

Two Sphingidae are available in Canada for 2016:

Pachysphinx modesta $5.00 Canadian; now sold out in Canda
Smerinthus cerisyi $5.00 Canadian. now sold out in Canada

Please specify species and quantities if you are placing an order and also be sure to include complete shipping address. I can receive payment from Canadian sources via personal check, email bank transfer through online banking, Paypal (with Paypal there is a 5% Paypal transaction fee).

Shipping costs will vary depending upon your exact address and the size and weight of your livestock package.. There will also be appropriate GST or HST amounts added to your order depending upon your province. I do remit all GST and HST amounts collected to government, and I do pay appropriate Provincial and Canadian taxes on profits after expenses.

As always WLSS will have first crack at what is available, and prices will be posted in the newsletters.

I recently received the following image from non-member Valene Begano.

Automeris zephyria fifth instar, Tijeras, Otero County, New Mexico,
courtesy of Valene Begano.

Valene writes, "Hello! We found this beautiful caterpillar on one of our piņon trees (we also have oak and ponderosa pine) and for the longest time was unable to identify, we of course took photos and placed him back on our tree. We haven't seen one since but know they live in higher elevations like ours (7500 feet) in NM. I'm sending this for your records. I would love to see more here and know nothing about how to encourage them to stay. If you have advice I would be interested. Thank you!"

I reply, "Hi Valene,

"Thanks for thinking of me. Very nice image.

"It is one of the Saturniidae in subfamily Hemileucinae. These moths have no mouth parts or feeding tubes and do not live long as adults (about 5-7 days). All their energy comes from fats stored from caterpillar days. Hence they usually do not fly too far and probably only have a range of about five miles as individual moths. Usually larvae feed on oak, and this one may have fallen or dropped from a higher oak onto the pinon tree. That (pinon) would be an unusual host.

"There is not too much you can do to encourage them to stay other than to make sure they have continued access to your oak trees. In the wild the offspring (about 200-250 eggs) from a single female paired with a wild male, usually have a revival success rate of about 1%, so the eggs deposited by a single female paired with a single male usually result in only about two of the offspring making it to adult stage. There are many predators (birds, reptiles, hornets, wasps, other insects) they encounter in nature, and they are also subject to parasitic wasps and flies and natural diseases. Sometimes and entire very local population can be wiped out, but then might rebound a few years later from successes in nearby areas.

"Here is a list of Saturniidae you might expect to find in Otero County:

Sphingicampa hubbardi, Automeris io neomexicana, Automeris zephyria, Coloradia doris, Coloradia pandora davisi, Hemileuca juno, Hemileuca tricolor, Hyalophora columbia gloveri, Agapema anona dyari, Agapema homogena, Antheraea oculea, Antheraea Polyphemus.

"Thanks for sharing. Here is a link to my New Mexico Sphingidae page: http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/Sphinx/NMsphinx.htm

Sphingidae Express

I have been receiving some very nice images of Lintneria smithi larvae from Arizona.

Catocala Capers

It turns out that the Tim Dyson recent image of what we both thought to be Catocala umbrosa, from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, is actually Catocala ilia, with correction by Larry Gall.
