September 16, 2003

Hi All,

Thanks to Stephen Barth who kindly sent me copies of "Mothly Newsletter" from May and June and July of 2002. They have been uploaded to archives.

I am looking for missing copies of the "Mothly Newsletter" for the months of December 2002 and anything prior to April 2002. If any of you have copies of those mailouts in your email files, please send copies back to me so I can archive them on the membership site.

I am planning a leisurely trip to New Jersey in late October. I'll be travelling through New Brunswick, Maine, southeastern New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey. If any of you would like to open your house for breakfast, lunch or dinner, I 'd be happy to visit for a while and trade stories.

I'm still agile enough to sleep in the back of the station wagon if your driveway is available. Let me know if you are interested.

I have posted some price changes to livestock on the membership site and also on my free sites. Those prices will go into effect immediately for non-members on the free sites, but members can still purchase at the old prices until end of September, so if you plan on ordering, get your order in right away.

I would like to be sold out by end of October so will be doing some mailouts to all those who have contacted me over years, members or not, to try to promote sales.

I am very interested in purchasing large quantities of cecropia (100 or more), promethea (50 or more) and cynthia (50 or more) so that I can mail out orders when I am in the states. if any of you have cocoons that you would like to sell wholesale of those species, please let me know.

I will not be offering any of the butterfly species this fall, except possibly Papilio polyxenes in Canada. It is also possible that ios, cynthia and promethea may be limited to U.S., except for relatively small quantities I have reared and am still rearing this summer. Cynthia are just now spinning and ios still have about two weeks to go if the foliage holds up. Inquire about availability before sending payment. Pretty sure I will be able to fill all orders received so far. i have some Smerinthus cerisyi, Sphinx poecila, Darapsa choerilus (pholus) and Paonias excaecata pupae all at $3.50/pupa.

I am also going to try to market rest of columbia (those from U.S. with orders already in should get them) in Canada and overseas to avoid cross border shipping into the U.S.

Membership continues to grow and I am excited about some of the new members from Europe and South America who have much to contribute.

Otso Reunanen of Finland has sent me nice images of some recently described Nudaurelia species from Tanzania.

Jan Hellert has sent me some very interesting drawings and some nice images. Check them out in the Members' Sidelines and Photography sections. You won't want to miss Argema besanti.

I received an image of an unknown Citheronia from northwestern Ecuador courtesy of Joseph Torres. Kirby Wolfe has identified it as Citheronia equatorialis based on its location and strong maculations. It is now posted in Citheronia equatorialis file.

Many thanks to Jeff Bottger from Peru for images of Rothschildia amoena larvae posted to the file for that species.

Thanks also to Don Adams who sent me an image of a large Citheronia regalis larva. I have added the image to the "Photography Section" and to the "Regalis Tips" article. I have also added additional notes and an image of a "shrunken" pre-pupal larva to the article.

Nice images have also come in of

Citheronia regalis larva, courtesy of Don Adams;
Eacles imperilis pini larva, courtesy of Janina;
Eacles imperialis larva, courtesy of Chris Suich;
Citheronia splendens sinaloensis larvae, courtesy of Scott Henninger;
Eacles (imperialis) oslari pair and pairing, courtesy of Jan Hellert;
Saturnia atlantica pairing and instars 3-5, courtesy of Jan Hellert:
I have also updated some files of Automeris iris with images from Joel Szymczyk and hope to get to new images by Russell Witkop Hemileuca hera magnifica and Tee Tarleton of Hemileuca maia very soon.

Check out Tee's images and my humour in the Photography section.

Rodolphe Rougerie also sent me some updates on Maltagorea species and Sinobirma with indications of more African images to come soon. Rodolphe has been a grat source of information. I am very pleased with the contributions received from all of you and for your continued support.

vernon Brou has sent some iformation for Louisiana Saturniidae and is again helping with some Catocala information.

If I have missed anyone, I am sorry. So much has come in this past month that it has been hard to keep up with it all.

The caterpillar identification sites that I operate bring in much useful information regarding distributions and some beautiful images. During the first week of September I had regalis larvae sightings from six different states.

I have now completed the County by County (Parish by Parish-Louisiana) Distribution Maps for all states with Saturniidae populations. Please have a look at your own state and advise me of anything that should be added or seems to be amiss.

I will do first burn of North American cd mid October. See details for purchase end of newsletter.

Rodolphe Rougerie has sent me some images and information (publications) about redescriptions of little known species and a description of a new species. Excerpts of articles are up at http://www.insectcompany.com/silkmoth/publications.htm

*********SPECIAL REQUESTS*********

Save your empty cocoons for Carol Neeves. She works with the silk and would like all the empties you can send her. Carol has just set me a write up with pictures to show what she does with the silk (now posted in Members' Articles section).

Neeves, Carol, 1609 Ponderosa Drive, Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57103

Janet Hightower is also looking for empty cocoons. She is doing a project on making rattles out of cocoons, and promises us some images and an article after she makes some noisemakers.

Help wanted: I am putting together a membership North American Butterfly Site. The introduction is at http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/ButterflyIntro.htm

I am seeking high quality jpg mages of adult butterflies and their larvae. I have a good start, having just scanned 300 slides from Leroy Simon and also have received some beautiful images from Steve Graser and promises of many to comes from Jim Snyder.

Membership in "Caterpillars Too" will $10.00 U.S. for members of WLSS. This rate will be in effect until December 31, 2003. Free membership to those who can supply high quality images of species not on site.

My Sphingidae of the Americas Site at http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/usatable.htm and my Catocala website at http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/catocala.html are on rented webspace. If you offer dried specimens for sale or operate some other Moth/Butterfly Enterprise and would like to sponsor those sites via an annual rate of $5.00/main page for each page ($1.00 for individual species) that your banner and link to your email and site are posted, please let me know. Both sites get much traffic.

North American Saturniidae cd available to members only at $15.00 U.S. which includes postage. State by state listings, pooled images for each species. Saves you airtime if that is an issue. Please note, this IS NOT the cd of the World's Largest Saturniidae Site which I hope to have ready for Christmas, but it does feature all of the North American species with county by county distribution maps. It is a real bargain at the price. I am sure you will be pleased.

Contract agreement is that copies of North American Saturniidae cd will not be distributed or copied for sale or redistribution by recipients.

For those of you who also follow Sphingidae and Catocala developments, I have completed checklists for Brazilian Sphingidae courtesy help from Catarina da Silva Motto and have received nice images of Catocala irene from David Wikle, Catocala junctura from Pierre Legault and Catocala cara larva courtesy of David Rodrigue. I have Catocala relicta and concumbens eggs this fall.
