Hi All,
I have been extremely busy with tending larvae the last three weeks, but it is raining today so I should be able to spend time with updates to the websites (Catocala, Sphingidae, Saturniidae).
I want to try to sort out Lonomia situation in Brasil and Leucanella for Mexico as there are some extremely similar species for both countries regarding the stated genera. Bernhard Wenczel and Viktor Suter continue to send many excellent images from Mexico, and I am regularly receiving images from Brasil from a number of photographers. I will shortly (hopefully) post links to commentary and comparison tables from respective species pages for Brasilien Lonomia and Mexican Leucanella.
I am beginning to harvest luna, polyphemus, cecropia and columbia cocoons on PEI, and it looks like I should have good numbers of all species except perhaps for cecropia. It is really too early to tell as cool wet weather can set in at any time here, and sometimes that seems to be a harbinger for disease. My Pachysphinx modesta and Smerinthus cerisyi have pupated.
I also have two Ceratocampinae still feeding Dryocampa rubicunda and a very small number of Anisota viriginiensis that I found in a luna-white paper birch sleeve that I was changing.
I expect to post pricelists for Canadian stock in late August early September and for USA stock in late September or early October. Prices will reflect quantities available, and I won't know that until the harvest is in.
Here are prices for Canadian livestock for 2016:
Actias luna $5.50 Canadian;
Antheraea polyphemus $6.00 Canadian;
Callosamia promethea $5.50 Canadian;
Dryocampa rubicunda $4.00 Canadian;
Hyalophora cecropia $7.00 Canadian;
Hyalophora columbia $7.00 Canadian;
Samia cynthia at $6.00 Canadian.
Two Sphingidae are available in Canada for 2016:
Pachysphinx modesta $5.00 Canadian;
Smerinthus cerisyi $5.00 Canadian.
I am open to trades or purchases if you have livestock indigenous to Canada not already on the above list.
Please specify species and quantities if you are placing an order and also be sure to include complete shipping address. I can receive payment from Canadian sources via personal check, email bank transfer through online banking, Paypal (with Paypal there is a 5% Paypal transaction fee).
Shipping costs will vary depending upon your exact address and the size and weight of your livestock package.. There will also be appropriate GST or HST amounts added to your order depending upon your province. I do remit all GST and HST amounts collected to government, and I do pay appropriate Provincial and Canadian taxes on profits after expenses.
I hope to have a US price list up soon, but in many cases in US larvae are still feeding at this time. Cocoons that get shipped to US destinations will be shipped from New Jersey in late October or from Maine, November until supplies run out in very early spring.
As always WLSS will have first crack at what is available, and prices will be posted in the newsletters.

Sphingidae Express
I continue to receive many images of Sphingidae larvae and adults and am getting many images of live specimens from Brazil. I do updates as time permits, but have been extremely busy with tending larvae for just about all of August. As of August 31, I only have small numbers of cecropia and columbia still feeding, probably 50-100 moere luna which should spin up within a week and a large number of polyphemus which probalby need a week or three to finish up. As cooler weather arrives in September, especially at night, larvae growth slows quite noticeably. I will be heading to woods in about fifteen minutes to hopefully harvest some polyphemus cocoons.
Alex Baranowski recently donfirmed Darapsa myron in Rhode Island.

Catocala Capers
Catocala agrippina has been confirmed in Maryland by Jhonatan Willey.
Tim Dyson has sent many images from Ontario, including a recent image of what we both think if Catocala umbrosa which may be a first record for Ontario. I will ask both Larry gall and Vernon Brou to have a look.

This website has been created and is maintained by Bill Oehlke without government or institutional financial assistance. All expenses, ie., text reference support material, webspace rental from Bizland and 1&1, computer repairs/replacements, backups systems, software for image adjustments (Adobe Photoshop; L-View), ftp software, anti-virus protection, scanner, etc. are my own. The one-time-life-time membership fee that is charged at the time of the registration covers most of those expenses.
I very much appreciate all the many images that have been sent to me, or of which I have been granted permission to copy and post from other websites. All images on this site remain the property of respective photographers.
If you would like to contribute to the maintenace of this website by sending a contribution to

your donation would be much appreciated and would be used for
1) paying for webspace rental;
2) paying for computer maintenance and software upgrades;
3) purchases of additional text reference material (journals and books) in an effort to stay current with new species;
I also hope to expand the North American Catocala site as well as the Sphingidae of the Americas site, to worldwide sites, and that will require additional funds for reference materials, etc. Both of those site are linked from your WLSS homepage.
If you are mailing a check from USA, please use $1.25 postage (2015 rate). Donations can also be made through Paypal via the button below.
Donations are not required to maintain your standing as a WLSS member, nor do they gain you any preferencial treatment with regard to livestock and/or supplies (sleeves), compared to other WLSS members. All WLSS members get first crack at my annual offerings and get an approximate discount of 10% as compared to non-members.
I do usually ask donors if they have any special requests for information on WLSS, and I try to accomodate when appropriate or within my ability to do so.
