Bolivia: Departments: Pando
Saturniidae: Tentative Checklist

The Department of Pando (northwestern Bolivia) is rich in natural resources, but the poverty level of its inhabitants is high, due largely to a lack of roads effectively linking the province to the rest of the country.

There are probably many Saturniidae species in the department, but the lack of roads and the presence of tropical diseases makes exploration/collecting difficult.

At an altitude of 280 meters above sea level in the northwestern jungle region, Pando is located in the rainiest part of Bolivia.

Pando has a hot climate, with temperatures commonly above 26 degrees Celsius (80 Fahrenheit).

Low altitude rainforest species would be those most likely encountered in Pando.

I have looked at the low elevation species confirmed for northern Puno, Peru; Beni, Bolivia; and Amazonas, Brazil; and have made a very tentative list for Pando.

Note well: very few Saturniidae species have actually been confirmed from Pando. Those species followed by WO? are purely speculative. I have made this tentative checklist primarily as an identification tool for myself should I begin to receive electronic images from Pando Department.

My intitial attempts at determinations would be to compare the images with those I suspect are in Pando.

Quite a few of the species listed below may not be found in Pando, and there are probalby quite a few species that do fly in Pando that are not on my tentative lists.

Sometimes people send me images of moths and/or their larvae from various countries. It is usually very helpful to know the collecting/sighting data as many species have specific ranges. Hopefully these provincial checklists, supported by Claude Lemaire's major Saturniidae works will help me and others with identifications.

I have not seen such checklists in Lemaire's publications, and the checklists are derived by going through his species accounts, one at a time.

I, William Oehlke, have added some interpolations, designated by by a question mark (?). Please note, my interpolations are not confirmed and may or may not be present. Please send sightings/images to Bill Oehlke.

At this time only Periga angulosa is confirmed in Pando.

Periga angulosa male.
