Located in southeastern Ecuador, Morona-Santiago shares its mountainous (highest point 5230m) western boundary with sister provinces of Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Canar and Azuay. To the east, the eastern slopes of the Andes give way to the much lower altitudes (350m) of almost all of the canton of Taisha which has an average temperature of 25-28C and is bordered by Pastaza Province to the northeast and the Republic of Peru to the southeast. To the south, Morona-Santiago is bordered by Zamora Chinchipe.
The map shows the eleven adminstrative cantons of Morona-Santiago. With the diverse habitats associated with different altitudes, host plants and temperatures of the eastern slopes and Amazon basin, Morona-Santiago has a great number of Saturniidae species.
Those species followed by CL are confirmed by Claude Lemaire; those followed by LTR are confirmed by Luigi Racheli. N.B.: Those species followed by my initials, WO?, are unconfirmed, but I feel they might be present.
There are probably more species present than are recorded in the table below.
