Sucumbios, Ecuador

Sucumbios Province, Ecuador

The province of Sucumbios is located in northeastern Ecuador. To the north it borders the country of Colombia; to the west it shares a border with the provinces of Carchi, Imbabura and Pichincha; to the south it shares a border with the provinces of Napo to the southwest and Orellana to the southeast; to the east it borders Peru.

Sucumbios has a humid tropical climate. There are two differentiated zones: to the west is the Third Mountain range (eastern slopes of the Andes), where the Reventador volcano predominates; to the east is the amazonian plain, consisting of virgin forest.

In 1989, Sucumbíos became the 21st province in the country. Prior to 1989 the area was part of Napo province. Many Saturniidae collected in Lumbacqui are therefore listed by Lemaire as being from Napo province.

Eventually I hope to develop a checklist for Sucumbios, and I will flesh out the map with more locations as sighting data arrives.

There is an oil field in Sucumbios so more reporting will probably occur in the near future. Horst Kach sends pictures and information, mostly from western parts of the province.

Those species followed by CL are confirmed by Claude Lemaire; those followed by LTR are confirmed by Luigi Racheli. Many species are confirmed by both of those gentlemen; I have only recorded the intitials for the one whose documentation I was perusing at the time of creating this list.

Species followed by my initials (WO), are not confirmed, but I anticipate their presence (or feel they might be present) in Sucumbios Province.

There are probably more species present than are recorded in the table below.
