Tungurahua Province, Ecuador

Please note: Locations of towns and cities are approximate.

'Tungurahua' in the native tongue means "throat of fire" and refers to the active volcano Tungurahua near the provincial border with Chimborazo. Banos is located at an elevation of 1800m, while the volcanic peak is above tree line and at one time featured a glacier.

Most of the province, except for the southeastern fifth, has high elevation mountains, and Tungurahua has a cool, wet temperate climate. Even the lower elevation southeastern fifth of the province is still mountainous, and it is probably around Topo that most Saturniidae species can be found.
