AUTOMERIS OF THE WORLD

Automeris coresus (Boisduval, 1859)

AUTOMERIS Hubner, [1819]

Moths of this neotropical and subtropical genus, which is confined to the Americas, are almost all nocturnal. Males have quadripectinate antennae while females usually have bipectinate antennae. The large, flashy "mammalian pupils/eyes" in the hindwings are considered a defensive startle mechanism. The moths typically rest with the hindwings concealed under the relatively drab forewings.

Deposited in relatively large clusters, eggs are usually white with a micropyle that turns black a few days after deposition if the eggs are fertile. Typically these moths stay paired for a relatively short period and are not often found together at dawn; the dark micropyle rosette confirms a mating has occured.

Larvae are highly gregarious, particularly in early instars and are armed with urticating spines. There can be as many as seven instars.

Automeris io, courtesy of Don Adams.

At pupation time, larvae usually leave the host to spin a cocoon among surface debris.

The genus Automeris belongs to the Hemileucini Tribe of Subfamily Hemileucinae in the Saturniidae Family.

An internet search for Automeris will pull up several species which belong to different genera (usually Leucanella or Pseudautomeris). Proper classifications are listed in brown.

P indicates an image is available. The first country listed is the specimen type locality.

Many new Automeris species were designated by Brechlin & Meister, 2011, largely based on DNA analysis. In many cases these new designations are already depicted on files of look-a-like species. Hopefully this will be rectified on this site by end of 2012. It will take me considerable time to process them all.
