PERIGA OF THE WORLD

PERIGA WALKER, 1855

The genus Periga belongs to the Hemileucini Tribe of Subfamily Hemileucinae in the Saturniidae Family. Periga species are very similar to Lonomia species, but Periga are generally smaller and lighter in colouration and have an antemedial line on the hindwings. Also, except for Periga rasplusi, the discal spots on the forewing of Periga species are outwardly connected by a line which may or may not contain a smaller, similar spot. The hindwings of Periga species usually have a small discal spot.

Larvae have urticating spines and are highly gregarious, especially in the earlier instars, and members of this genus are found in South and Central America.

The European Entomologist: Abstract: Four new Periga Walker, 1855 from Southeastern and Southern Brazil are described: Periga caraca sp. n. from Minas Gerais; Periga acuta sp. n. from Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana, and Santa Catarina; Periga alticola sp. n. from Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro; and P. pulchra sp. n. from Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. These are compared to the similar species, Periga circumstans Walker, 1855 described from Rio de Janeiro, which differs mainly by the habitus, male labial palp color, tarsus color, and male genitalia. Percentage differences in the partial COI mitochondrial gene sequences (DNA barcode) are presented for all species. Holotypes are deposited in Col. Padre Jesus S. Moure, Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Parana, Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.
