PSEUDODIRPHIA OF THE WORLD

The Jim vargo image above is very similar to P. eumedidoides and it may be that species. However, I think it could be something undescribed due to slightly less oblique pm line. I think the image below, remarkably from same area with same date, is true Pseudodirphia eumedidoides. Note differences in angulation of pm and pm lines, size, and black rings on abdomen.

Pseudodirphia dioscola, male, 82mm, Amazonia Lodge, Madre de Dios, Peru,

Recent 2008 and 2011 additions by Brechlin and Meister have caused me to rethink the specimens above, with updates directly below the images.

PSEUDODIRPHIA BOUVIER, 1928

The genus Pseudodirphia belongs to the Hemileucini Tribe of Subfamily Hemileucinae in the Saturniidae Family. Larvae have urticating spines, and members of this genus are found in South America and Central America.

Moths fly even on bright, moonlit nights, but activity seems confined on all nights to 1.5 to 2 hours sometime between 9:00pm and midnight.

P indicates an image is available. The first country listed is the specimen type locality.
