DISTRIBUTION:

Cerodirphia chanchillensis (wingspan: males: 81mm; females: 86mm // Mfwl: 38-40mm; Ffwl: 43mm) flies in
Peru: Amazonas.

Ground colour is a uniform medium-brown with an orangey tinge. Pm lines of all wings are a diffuse, slightly darker grey.

The forewing outer margin is convex. The hindwing outer margin appears slightly scalloped due to darker fringe at end of veins, contrasting with the offwhite to light brown fringe between veins.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been recorded on the wing in January, June-July and November at elevations of 2800-3500m. There may be additional flight months.

Cerodirphia chanchillensis female, 86mm, Amazonas, Peru,
on my home computer only.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use highly developed antennae to locate females at night by tracking their airbourne pheromone plumes.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larve feed gregariously and have urticating spines.

The species name, chanchillensis, is indicative of a specimen type location in the Chanchillo Region of Amazonas.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
