DISTRIBUTION:

Cerodirphia occikani (wingspan: males: 50mm; females: // Mfwl: 24-26mm; Ffwl: ) flies in
Argentina: Misiones; and
Brazil: Parana; Santa Catarina.

Cerodirphia occikani is apparently sympatric with zikani, at least, in parts of Santa Catarina. Generally however, occikani has a more westerly range. It will probably be quite difficult to distinguish between zikani, occikani and mielkei from photos, although the forewing pm line tends to be more oblique in occikani. Mielkei tends to have a slightly rose tint while the other two species are dark brown.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been recorded on the wing in April and August-December at elevations of 500m. There may be additional flight months.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use highly developed antennae to locate females at night by tracking their airbourne pheromone plumes.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larve feed gregariously and have urticating spines.

The species name, occikani, is indicative of a great similarity to C. zikani, and a possible range that is west of that of zikani.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
