DISTRIBUTION:

Cerodirphia flavoscripta (wingspan: males: 69-80mm; females: 98mm) flies in Ecuador: Azuay, Morona-Santiago and Loja: Saraguro at elevations of 2200m to 3150m to 3500m (HK).

The abdomen is black, without white rings on the dorsal surface.

Forewing ground colour is brown, more blackish in the basal area. The costa is often a dull yellow in the basal-median area. The cell marking is large and yellow except for its whitish tip. There is sometimes a thin grey line running in the center of the black strip in the cell. The post median line is blackish, wide and diffuse. Note dark fringes on all wings, outside a dark and prominent linear border.

The hindwing often has a pinkish hue along the inner margin

The undersides are lighter, almost a dull yellow.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken from late December until early March (HK), and this species probably flies as a single brood at high elevation.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use highly developed antennae to locate females at night by tracking their airbourne pheromone plumes.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larve feed gregariously and have urticating spines.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
