DISTRIBUTION:

Cerodirphia kattyae (wingspan: males: 79mm; females: mm // forewing length: males: 41-44mm; females: ) flies at medium altitude (1670-1900m) in
Ecuador: Napo: Los Crocodilos.

This moth is quite similar to reoseamazonica and roseissima, but both of those species are darker than the bright red of kattyae.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Specimens have been taken in March, July-August and December, suggesting at least three annual broods.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use highly developed antennae to locate females at night by tracking their airbourne pheromone plumes.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Larve feed gregariously and have urticating spines.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.

The species name, "kattyae", is honourific for the Katty Kaech, the wife of Horst Kaech.
