DISTRIBUTION:

Dirphiopsis orientalis (wingspan: males: 59mm; females: 85mm // Mfwl: ; Ffwl: ) flies in
Ecuador: Napo; at elevations of.

This moth, from eastern Ecuador, was originally treated as a subspecies of Dirphiopsis flora which is known from western Ecuador. Brechlin and Meister elevated it to full species status in 2011. There seems to be a strong flaring of brown, outside the cell and through the pm line in D. orientalis. The pm line is more continuous in D. flora.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Moths fly in and possibly at other times. Larval hosts are unknown.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use highly developed antennae to locate females by tracking their airbourne pheromone plumes.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Eggs are probably laid in large clusters and larvae feed gregariously. Typical of the Subfamily Hemileucinae, Dirphiopsis species all have urticating spines.

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.

The species name, orientalis is indicative of a specimen type locale in eastern Ecuador: Napo.
