DISTRIBUTION:

Hypermerina kasyi (forewing length: males: 31-32mm; females: probably larger) flies in low - medium altitude andean forests (750 - 1800 m) in
Bolivia: La Paz (TD): Provincia Murillo: Rio Zongo (750m),
Cochabamba: Provincia Carrasco (1450m), Chuquisaca: Provincia Hernando Siles (1400m);
eastern Ecuador: Orellana (orangey specimen) and Napo; and
Peru: Amazonas, Cusco (CL), Junin (VI), (probably San Martin, Huanuco, Puno (WO??)). Vladimir Izersky reports it (orangey specimen) flying at elevations as high as 2600m in Junin, Peru.

Reddish orangey-brown specimens, previously displayed on this page from Ecuador and Peru, have been moved to the H. rubrojunensis file. Possibly the darker olive grey-green species, H. kasyi, is limited to Bolivia and to southeastern Peru: Cusco and Puno. Possibly the two species are sympatric in some areas. I do not know.

The image in Lemaire's Hemileucinae, 2002, identified as H. kasyi from Cusco, Peru, appears to be the an example of the darker olive grey-green species, kasyi.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Moths are on the wing in June-July and again in November-December.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Males use well-developed antennae to seek out females which scent at night. Females are probably active from 10:00 pm until midnight; males are active from 10:30 pm until 1:00 am.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Typical of species in the Genus Hypermerina and the Subfamily Hemileucinae, the larvae are armed with urticating spines.

Larval Food Plants

It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive. Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
