DISTRIBUTION:

Hylesia teratex (wingspan: males: 35-43mm; females: 53-58mm) flies in
Suriname: Marowijne;
French Guiana: Saint Georges L'Oyapok, Camopi, Kaw, Cayenne, Regina, Coralie, Saint-Jean-du-Maroni;
Venezuela: Bolivar, Amazonas;
Ecuador: Napo; and
Peru: Huanuco, Loreto; and
probably in Guyana.

This species has been taken at elevations from 100m to 1300m.

The thorax is dark brown. The abdomen is yellow, interspersed with black. The ground colour is light olive-grey, becoming darker toward the outer margin, especially near the produced apex which hosts a light oval spot. The am line is vestigial. The cell spot is brown and prominent. The pm line is thin but distinct. The basal dash is dark brown.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Larval hosts are unknown.

This species probably broods continuously on a three month cycle.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of the abdomen, and the night-flying males pick up and track the airbourne pheromone plume with their well-developed antennae.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Eggs are deposited in clusters on hostplant foliage.

Hylesia teratex larvae are highly gregarious and have the urticating spines typical of larvae from the Subfamily Hemileucinae.
