DISTRIBUTION:

Hylesia vialactea (wingspan: males: 30-38mm; females: 44-49mm) flies in
Bolivia: Santa Cruz, La Paz, Chuqisaca; at moderate to high elevation (1800-3000m).

This is a lighter species with forewing colouration closer to purplish-grey, almost white. The forewing discal cell is dark and prominent.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:

Larval hosts are unknown.

This species has been taken in April and December.

ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:

Females extend a scent gland from the tip of the abdomen, and the night-flying males pick up and track the airbourne pheromone plume with their well-developed antennae.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS AND PUPAE:

Eggs are deposited in clusters on hostplant foliage.

Hylesia vialactea larvae are highly gregarious and have the urticating spines typical of larvae from the Subfamily Hemileucinae.
