DISTRIBUTION:
Ormiscodes joiceyi
(wingspan: males: 51-58mm; females: 67mm) flies in
Chile: Valdivia: Valdivia; Llanquihue: Puerto Montt; Isla de Chiloe: Dalcahue.
This is a low elevation species.
Ormiscodes joiceyi has an almost uniform orangey-beige abdomen. Ground colour of the wings is variable, but generally brownish-beige, not as bright as the abdomen.
The discal spot is yellow and the broadly preapical, scalloped postmedian line
is recurved toward the body as it nears the costa. There is a variation that is totally devoid of lines.

FLIGHT TIMES AND PREFERRED FOOD PLANTS:
Ormiscodes
joiceyi is probably single brooded throughout most, if not
all, of its range. Adults are likely on the wing from March-June.
ECLOSION, SCENTING AND MATING:Females extend a scent gland
from the tip of the abdomen, and the males pick up and
track the airbourne pheromone plume with their well-developed antennae.

EGGS, LARVAE, COCOONS, AND PUPAE:
Eggs, the diapausing stage, are deposited in rings around host plant twigs. Early instar larvae
typically feed gregariously. Late instar larvae become more widely
dispersed on host trees and understory vegetation. Pupation is under the soil or amongst leaf litter.

Larval Food Plants
It is hoped that this alphabetical listing followed by the common
name of the foodplant will prove useful. The list is not exhaustive.
Experimenting with closely related foodplants is worthwhile.
